Meditation Monday

Meditation Monday

Offering Metta : The Practice of Lovingkindness

On this Meditation Monday, I am doing something a little different.

Instead of providing a meditation here, I'm sending you to the site of a new blog friend, Kimberly Winston, author of the book and blog, Bead One, Pray Too, and we are going to meditate together over there.

Today, Kimberly is featuring a piece on how she and I connected with the help of a powerful prayer/meditation practice of Metta—the practice of lovingkindness.

Metta is a practice that has truly transformed my life. It can transform yours, too ... to be more gentle, loving and kind ... to yourself and others ... even difficult others ... and, in time, everyone on this beautiful planet.

I will post more here later this week on Metta and how it has changed me, changed my life, for the better. Can't wait? Follow through the links on Kimberly's post today and you can learn more about it now. Enjoy!

Come on over to Bead One, Prayer Too for Metta. Let us bless one another together.

May you be happy.
May you be well.
May you be safe.
May you be peaceful and at ease.

And, as always, I welcome your thoughts ...

(Note: I've fallen in love with the beautiful image above of a Hindu woman praying. Read all about her here.)

That is also my metta prayer. Word for word, Jan. You bring tears to my eyes as I love your spirit and all that you share.

Jan, this metta prayer is a missing piece for me. You opened up my world a little today! Thank you for sharing your book excerpt over on the Prayer Beads site. Blessings, Jodi

Mermaid,
We are kindred spirits in this. Metta feels like my passion and purpose ... You, too, I know. In fact, a listening meditation (previous post) and Metta have become my primary meditation practices. They are truly what WORK and align me with the peace and joy that is there.

May you be strong, yet gentle and pliable as the waves.

Jodi,
I am glad that this post and Metta have opened a pathway for you. It is a powerful and transformative practice if we give ourselves over to it. I understand what you mean about a missing piece. Metta ended up being my missing peace too, so I can truly relate. :-)

May you be happy...

Jan, I truly enjoyed reading your excerpt today. I would love to learn more about metta if you are able. :)

I love this photograph, Jan- so visually stunning, moving, awakening. And I'm so happy to check back in over the week for reminders of the benefits of metta.
Coming to your blog is like returning to a well of Spirit where I may drink deeply of refreshing waters. Thank you!

Jan, I was so moved by the photo alone no words were needed. Then the metta prayer, and the link to Kimberly's site...well, it was such a treasure trove of spiritual bounty. Thank you for your continued mission. You are such a wonderful spiritual guide and your blog is a true oasis of peace and love and safety and friendship. May you be blessed beyond imagining....xo diantha

Tabitha,
Yes, I will continue offering some thoughts on metta by week's end. Have some travel coming up so not sure when all will post, but they will. I am glad the practice resonates..

May you be happy and healthy!

Ingrid,
I just adore this photo too. The photographer is in India so I am going to see if her photos are for purchase. :-) And on we will go, doing metta together...

May you be joyful!

Diantha,
Glad you loved the photo as well. :-) Kimberly was very gracious about all those links and her site IS a treasure trove. Thank you, as always, for your gracious comments. Your support means so much...

May you be abundantly creative!

Hi Jan,
I love the metta and loving kindness meditations. Thanks for reminding us about them. (I also love Sharon Salzberg, who you quoted in your blog.)

Kimberly Winston is great. Have you bought her prayer bead book? It has the most beautiful photos. And she writes very inspiringly.

May you be happy, may you be well, may you be safe.

(And thanks for looking at my orchid photos!)

Love this prayer. The metta practice sounds wonderful and so much needed in this world right now.

Laura,
Sharon S. is one of my favorites. I think I have read all her books. She also has a wonderful book with CD with various metta meditations in it titled, "The Force of Kindness." I have often given it as a gift to others. And I am so happy to have connected with Kimberly. I am eagerly awaiting her book. Look for her here sometime in August as a special guest.

May you be content.

Annie,
Glad this resonated with you. It certainly is a practice that the world needs now more than ever. :-)

May you be trusting and at ease.

I've never heard of Metta, but it sounds like a beautiful practice. Couldn't each one of us benefit from being just a bit more kind, loving, gentle? And the verse you included here is so moving in its simplicity, yet kind thoughts. Very inspiring.

Joanne July 13, 2009 10:03 PM

And a quick P.S.

Wishing you much the same as your lovely verse.

Sharon July 14, 2009 7:44 AM

Your meditation is beautiful in its simplicity. It reminds me of something a good friend shared with me:

Work with joy.
Pray with love.
Dream from your heart.
Share what you have.
Live simply. Love deeply.

Joanne,
All of us can certainly benefit from any practices that help us be more gentle with ourselves and others.

May you be content.

Sharon,
Your sharing is lovely as well. Thank you for offering this beautiful sentiment. So powerful in its simplicity.

May you be peaceful and at ease this day. :-)

Brandi July 16, 2009 1:42 PM

*sigh* I love metta. :-) thank you for this post.

Brandi,
I love metta too. Double sigh...
