Meditation Monday
"Be Still and Know that I Am God"
When I was in training to become a spiritual director, we often used this passage from Hebrew scripture to quiet us. (Psalm 46:10)
Now I am not one to quote scripture very often, but I am fond of using a mantra, sacred word, or passage from sacred writings of varied religious traditions to focus my busy thoughts and bring myself to stillness. I have found this one in particular to be very effective. What we learned to do with this passage in our training, however, was very special. I'd like to share it with you on this beautiful Meditation Monday.
Here are the instructions:
Begin by taking a few deep breaths to center yourself. Take as many as you need to settle down, to settle in.
Next, say the phrase in its entirety. "Be still and know that I am God."
Let the words soothe you, drop down into you. Really feel the words and their calming effect upon you.
Repeat the phrase again, this time dropping off the last word. "Be still and know that I am."
Continue on in this way, breathing deeply and evenly, as you drop yet one more word from the phrase, until there is only one word left. Go slowly and savor the experience as you come to a place of stillness within you.
"Be still and know."
"Be still."
"Be."
You can also modify the phrase if you wish, changing the word "God" to any virtue of the Spirit.
Peace: "Be still and know that I am Peace."
Love: "Be still and know that I am Love."
Joy: "Be still and know that I am Joy."
Now, does your heart have anything to say?
Today, may you be peaceful and at ease ...

Jan, this was a beautiful way to start my day! Thank you so much!
I've been using this mantra in quiet meditation and in song ever since the first day that we met.
Thank you for sharing it here for our busy Monday morning. JG
Thank you for these meditations you share, Jan. This one definitely helped quiet me so my spirit could shine.
Jan, we are psychically connected, I swear!
I've long felt this particular passage was written for me and I will repeat it to myself when I'm feeling particularly frazzled and harried. It quietens me immediately and helps me to put things into perspective. It's short & to the point and extremely effective.
I've even contemplated having the scripture reference tattooed on my body somewhere where I will see it often. And, I'm not the tattoo type.
Just this morning, I offered this quote to a good friend who is facing a challenge today.
When I opened your page and that was the first thing I saw...well... :o)
Have a great day!
Thank you for sharing this with ut, Jan! This is so helpful. And peaceful. And soothing. Thank you again!
Tabitha,
Yes, it is a good way to start a day! I imagine you have many others you use, as well.
Julie,
Lovely! What a a lovely idea to add notes to it then sing it to yourself. :-)
Jill,
I am so glad they help. We all need a little polishing up to be extra shiny on occasion. :-)
Carolynn,
Well, I do believe in Holy Synchronicity so I am not one bit surprised at our connection here. I am heartened to hear that this passage soothes you and brings you "Home." The tattoo could prove interesting. How about a henna one? Less permanent. (smile)
Jan,a very beautiful meditation.I have learnt a new meditation today.thank you
blessings for abundance

This is exactly how I feel when I take a morning coffee outside to the deck, overlooking a happy zinnia patch growing with wild abandon. I sit with my coffee, and let myself and everything around me just "be."
Jan, this is one of my very favorite meditations. Thanks for reminding me of it! We used to play the song that goes with this during healing sessions at a healing center in Chicago when I lived and worked there. It was amazing how far away all the noise and traffic and hub-bub became with these simple phrases being uttered. Peace to you....xo
Jan, I do something very similar to this often, and really love it. I have found repeating a phrase like this is a really good meditation or calming technique for kids too - since it involves speaking, they can grasp onto it a little easier.
this meditative phrase is one of my personal favourites
and one that many others seem to respond well to
stillness is magnetic in this day of hustle bustle
Jodi,
It does bring a sense of peace and I'm noticing a sense of joy right along with it. Happy to hear this speaks to you.
Sema,
Always great to learn something new, especially to revitalize our spiritual practices. :-) Blessings to you too!
Joanne,
Lovely picture you paint, Joanne. Gotta love those zinnias!
Diantha,
I didn't know there was a song that went along with it. Can you hum a few bars? :-) I'd like to learn it.
Lisa,
I like the spin you put on this--that such a meditation can be very potent for kids. Very helpful!
Kel,
Nice to hear that this is one of your favorites too! Cultivating stillness is so important in times like these...
Jan,
QA perfect way to begin the week - being, being still, knowing God. We can face anything now.
Ever since I first heard heard and read this verse as a teenager, it has become my heart's ready plea in the many troubling episodes in my life.
God has imbued my heart and my life with His divine peace when I needed it most and He continues to honor His word, "Be still and know that I am God." It is in the stillness of His presence, that I know Him and recognize His hand in my life.
Hello! I just landed on your blog and I'm quite sure I was guided here...I am an intern Spiritual Director, writer, activist, midwife and homeschooling/unschooling mother of four children; the elder three are now young adults, and one beautiful 8 year old. As a MIchigan Crone and Spiritual Director, I am always looking to form community with others involved in the same work; what a delight to find you here. My blog is at closetotheroot.blogspot. com and is a compilation of writing about many things; it's form has changed somewhat over time and I'm still searching for the right "fit" with it but I'm getting close. I'll be sure to add you to my upcoming "favorite blogs/blogs I follow" listing. Very nice work here! Blessings on you. Michelle Wilbert aka. Kneelingwoman
Jan, it's truly like going away on a mini meditation retreat when I come here.
BTW, I am going to try and go to a 7 day retreat on the sacred feminine at Spirit Rock in Oct. Lots of guilt for leaving my daughter behind, but I know I need to do this.
What a beautiful mantra. I love the way you back off words working your way to the first…Be… Such a simple word… yet so hard to do at times... Be. My heart is peaceful today as I used your mantra and found Peace, Love, Joy in the breath of Life. Thank you for sharing and bringing us Meditation Mondays. Love and Light, Nina P.
That is beautiful. I will try it. I received my copy of "earth's echo" today. I opened it up, and it was on the first page of the chapter "The Desert"! That's ironic because right now I am not feeling the least bit in harmony with the desert here in Arizona because of the heat. But the book is so lovely, as are the other two similar ones I ordered. I also bought "Gentle Keeping" Prayers and Services for Remembering Departed Ones Throughout the Year" by Mauryeen O'Brien, O.P., which is something I have been trying to find for years. So thanks for the suggestion about "Earth's Echo" at Ave Maria Press.
Cheryl,
I am not surprised that this passage would speak deeply to you and nurture you. :-) Blessings!
Michelle,
Welcome! Glad you found this blog and I will visit yours shortly. Many blessings on your journey. It sounds like a most soulful one, and congratulations on your discernment to serve as a spiritual director!
Mermaid,
I am so glad to hear that you will be going away on retreat. I know it is hard to leave your little one but oh, I can imagine how well you will bask in the silence and support of beloved teachers and companions. Enjoy! Wish I could go with you. :-)
Nina,
I am so happy to hear that peace was yours today using this prayer form. Stillness speaks...
Gayle,
Enjoy the book. As you know there are sections in it for all of nature's geographies. :-) The other books sound lovely, too. I will check them out. Thank you!
I have been using this meditation at night as I settle down before sleep. It does bring peace and ease, as does visiting your blog. Peace be with you, Jan.
Sharon,
Oh, thank you for these kind thoughts. I am celebrating that you are finding peace of mind and heart using these meditations. That news does my heart good!
