Meditation Monday - Kairos Time

On this Meditation Monday, I invite you to take and pause and enter into "Kairos Time."

When the world seems to draw us into its chaotic energy, or we notice its woes having a depressive effect upon us, one of the most helpful things we can do is to create sacred space for ourselves. We stop what we are doing and consciously choose to enter “kairos” time, a word coined by the Greeks to imply a sense of timelessness, a period where we are fully engaged in the present moment, in activity that nurtures our souls.

One way we engage kairos time is by pausing to light a candle. The simple act of setting match to wick, conjures up memories for me, of ancient ones in caves drawing close, sequestering themselves from unfriendly elements. Fire represents not only comfort and warmth in most cultures, but a symbolic connection with the Sacred—the Source of all life. Churches and temples worldwide often have an eternal flame burning, a visual reminder of the ever-present nature of Spirit itself.

Before I engage in the act of writing, for example, I always light a candle. Doing so, concretizes my intention to access inner calm and clarity for writing. It also aligns me with the Spirit to whom I dedicate my work.

The ancient Greeks often referred to a ritually lit candle as a “Hestia” or “temenos” candle. Hestia was the goddess of the hearth. The hearth within each home was considered Hestia’s domestic sanctuary. “Temenos” comes from the Greek meaning “safe place” or “sanctuary.” When we consecrate a space with light from a candle, we have created a sanctuary for ourselves; a safe place for us to intimately connect with ourselves or others, and the Divine.

The next time a current challenge threatens to rob you of your peace, you may want to enact a candle lighting ritual. Do so with the intention of reengaging your peaceful self and the Source of your inner light. As you kindle the candle, say, aloud or silently:

“I light the fire of my soul life and enter my temenos space
to connect with the Spirit within me.”

Spend the next few moments in silence, feeling your way into this newly sanctified space you have created. Notice how you are being invited into a place of greater calm. You may want to take some time to focus on the flame itself as a form of quieting meditation, to deepen this feeling of peace. Allow the light from the candle’s glow to fill and warm your heart. Here, in this sacred space, you are safe and loved, home in the wholeness of your being.

Now, does your heart have anything to say?

Hi Jan, I am a huge fan of lighting candles. The flame always hypnotize me to calmness.

Have a very blessed day. :)

I light a candle for every evening meal. This is sacred space and time for my husband, 2 boys and me. We light a candle, say a prayer of thanksgiving and enJOY a very positive and peacefilled time with eachother.
When I need more "temenos space to connect with the Spirit within me" I build a bon fire in my backyard and enjoy the silence.

Hi Jan,

My mother was Catholic and she struggled with her religion. The funny thing is that anytime someone we knew needed help, she would take me to church with her and we would light a candle.

I always loved doing that and still do that now even though my mother is no more here. There is something very sacred about it.

Hi Jan -- I do appreciate any opportunity to let go of the concept of time for a little while and this exercise sounds great to me.

This is Lovely.

I like the visualization of walking in meditation with every moment where one's heart is a lit candle and the sacred space is always seen and felt with each breath taken. A crystal can easily be substituted for candles, and the sun within can yet be another symbol of connective centeredness. The options are creatively endless.

I believe it is our destiny to walk in this manner with every moment through time and beyond time. Keep the inner Light House shining for the world to See. Shine as if you are a Star in the Heavens.

Tabitha,
I am a huge fan too. Can never have too many candles or too much stationary! Glow on!

Julie,
What a lovely act, makes every meal a Sabbath. And I love the idea of lighting a big bonfire to connect with Spirit. Enjoy!

Nadia,
Beautiful custom and glad to know that you are still enjoying it despite your mom's passing. It is a powerful gesture of connection.

Chris,
Glad it resonated. May you shine on too!

Kel,
Thinking of you and your lovely place in Australia I do think of "temenos." :-)

Bernie,
What a powerful sentiment and invitation. May we all be the candle, the light of Spirit, walking in the world. May we carry the flame within us. Thank you for this! And I agree, this is our birthright and our destiny. :-)

What a good idea, lighting a candle. I am really challenged to get out of my "do it, do it" routine when I work. This simple act would be one way to invoke some extra spaciousness. (I like my work routine, but it would be nice to make it even more pleasant.)
Also, maybe it would be nice when I "sit" outside!
Very nice, thank you!

Hi Jan!
Bless you for your "light"! I light a candle to begin my Circle of Love time every day before I journal. When I light it, I think of everyone that needs a prayer, or special love and attention, whether for illness or problems. It's my prayer time and gratitude session. Sure as shootin, if I don't make time for this in the morning, the day goes to hell.

Jan,
How lovely!
I have an array of candles all around the interior of the boat. I light certain ones at certain times, but never thought of a ritual about it. Just find it comforting. And my children and friends know if the candles are lit all is peaceful and well.

I loved reading that, and each day light a candle next to my computer before beginning my work. It does feel very ritualistic to light a candle. I don't think I recognized that until I read your post. Thank you, Jan, for this wonderful bit of background and for adding depth to something I enjoy doing. Joy and love to you!

Jan,
I know it's Wednesday and I lighted a candle this morning so I'm a little slow but on the same wave length!

I love candles and find myself burning them less in AZ. Probably because it's so light here all the time! You write in such depth and I enjoy it.

Laura,
I can just see you lighting candles as you intentionally make those lovely malas. The beads will reflect the candles' glow. ;-)

SuZen,
Doesn't it though?! Without the proper start to my day, I drag along and simply accomplish, not achieve or inspire... Light on!

Joy,
The visual of your boat flooded with candle light is so appealing. Feels like a spa on water. Enjoy!

Megan,
A lit candle on the desk companioning us as we do our "spirit work" feels just right to me, too. May we shine!

Tess,
Honestly, I might trade in some of my candles to live in a clime that carried more natural light. AZ sounds divine! May you inner fire be strong today.
