Meditation Monday

On this Meditation Monday, a meditative practice for opening the heart.

Many of us worldwide now find ourselves fully launched into the holiday season. The hustle and bustle of shopping, decorating, or entertaining may overwhelm us. It is the season of openheartedness, yet we may find ourselves feeling irritated with others, especially if we are called into family or workplace gatherings to spend time with people with whom we may have difficulty.

Here is a meditation you can do—anytime, anywhere—to keep your heart open when it feels like it wants to close itself off from others.

Give your body permission to relax. Focus on your breath, taking one gentle inhale and exhale at a time ... slowly, evenly, bringing your body to a place of calm. Take all the time you need to settle down and into your self.

Now bring your attention to your heart center. Visualize a beautiful flower residing there—a rose, a lotus, any variety of many-petalled flower.

Notice its vibrant color, the texture of its petals, its heady aroma.

As you continue to breathe, ever so gently, feel the breath of Spirit infusing it with life, opening your heart petal by petal. Notice all constrictions easing as you give yourself over to this beautiful sensation of opening.

You may wish to silently say to yourself:

I open myself to the universal flow of Love.
I allow compassion and lovingkindness to wash through me,
opening the petals of my heart.
I breathe in Love,
I breathe out compassion.
I extend myself in kindness.
May my heart be in full flower with everyone I meet.*

Now, does your heart have anything to say ...

As always, I welcome your thoughts.

And you might like to give yourself an extra special treat today by reading Dr. Mark Brady's newest blog post on "Taking the Brain to Heart." It's fabulous, a must read for people on the path to awakening. If you recall, Mark was a guest here just recently speaking about heart-centered parenting. Enjoy!

What a beautiful meditation, Jan, and one I could see myself doing quite a bit over the next few weeks. There are certainly times when my heart needs the prompt - via meditation or focused thought - to remain open to all. Or maybe it's my mind that needs to put down its defenses and just allow everything and everyone to be as they are.
Either way, this meditation will work wonders. Thank you!

A beautiful and calming meditation.
Thank you,Jan.
I thought of you as I was writing today's post on my affirm mantra-breathe easy.

Megan,
I like how you put this...when the mind needs to put down its defenses. 'Tis true. If we listen to our heart, we get in much less trouble, don't we? :-)

I do like this meditation. It works for me. I often image myself breathing in and out, and the petals of the flower themselves moving in and out so gently. Very soothing!

Sema,
I hope this helps. And, yes, your current mantra on your site confirms this. Thank you! Kindred we are...

How beautiful, and certainly calming! My lessons lately have been in opening my heart, so I welcome this meditation.
This morning while walking Ginger (my latest family addition) I noticed the sun was bright and warm, so when we got back I lay on a cushion in the cockpit, with Ginger curled up next to me. I pet her, and let the sun shine down, and thought how peaceful and serene. Just looking up at the clouds feeling love and peace. The kids were at school, my neighbors were out, just the sounds of the harbor and the feeling of the warm sun. I set the intent to let that feeling of peace carry me through this day, to see how far I could let it stretch. It's been a few hours, and still it's such a sensation. Particularly neat since I had to open my little heart pretty far to accept Ginger; we experience many moments of peace after walking, and I appreciate this added dimension she's brought! I can't imagine what else the future holds:)

Hi Jan .. this is just what we need at this time of year .. and I definitely will need to apply it in the next few weeks.

I shall bring a flower bud to mind and gently let it open, calming me as it comes for full flower.

Joy,
This morning for you sounds like a heart breaking open experience. I take joy myself in hearing how you connect with the sacredness of the moment, enjoy the elements, and hold gratitude in your heart... Lovely!

Hilary,
I hope this meditation will serve you well when the time is right. I wonder which flower you would choose???

What a nice visual, the heart opening petal by petal. I think the process opens us to so much, welcoming light and peace into our days chock-filled with bustle. A wonderful thought to call upon, Jan.

Joanne,
It is helpful to use lovely peaceful images to center ourselves, isn't it? Just naturally soothes, petal by petal, breath by breath. Ah....

Davine,
Oh, so glad you found moments of ease with this.

Hilary,
Fabulous flower. I can see why you would choose it.

By the way, please be sure to come by tomorrow Hilary. There is a special guest right up your alley...On caregiving, oh yes!

Laura,
So glad that speaks to you of ease and well-being. May it serve you well.

Hi Jan! That meditation is sooo soothing - like a warm snuggly blanket - I thank you once again for the gift! I love picturing rose petals opening - add my rose scented candle and wow - nice combo!

Btw, Beth checked my comment thingy - she said it was working just fine - not sure what I should do if you keep having problems?

This post embodies "peaceful and at ease." This Monday meditation and image came to me as I was having trouble getting to sleep last night. The next thing I knew the alarm was going off.

Hi Jan .. it's 3.15pm here and it hasn't come through yet ... I'll be back to look.

I'm trying to do what I can in my non-technical way to help Patricia re her (free) ebook openings: if she gets 1,000 openings she will be donated for UNICEF $1,000 by a local organisation .. seems good to me ..

my Cornish pasty features in there ..

Anyone else please do the same! Thank you ..

Also Jan - how do you get Lance's ebook logo onto blogger is it difficult?

Thank you .. bye - Hilary

SuZen,
It does feel like a snuggly blanket, doesn't it. I can just smell the rose scented candle now. Enjoy and drift off...

Sharon,
Oh, I am so glad! I love when this happens and peace of body, mind and heart come. Glad you were able to experience this firsthand.

Hilary,
Post is up now. Enjoy! Thanks for the lead to the other blog. I will check it out. As for the logo, just drag the image from my blog to your desktop. Upload it into Blogger like you would any other photo you use on your site. That should do it. No special code needed. Just link it to the correct link, the one Lance sent you in an e-mail. If you don't have it, let me know. :-)

What a wonderful mediation. A fullness of heart and soul. I can use this when I get frustrated with my young struggling friend. I love the imagery of a blossom opening.
Thank you dear Jan for the wonderful books by Dr. Mark Brady. They will surely help me with the young people I mentor. You are a kind and generous soul. Blessings to you and yours. Love and Light, Nina P
