A Powerful Meditative Practice for the Holidays
It's another Meditation Monday. Because I am taking this week off to celebrate the holidays fully with my family, I wanted to offer a centering practice that is perfect for this time of year—one you may want to call upon again and again as the pace picks up this week and next.
I call it: Focusing on the “Other”
Consider this. When we are feeling the most stressed, anxious, or fearful we may be focused solely on ourselves. Thoughts swirl and emotions arise luring us into self-preoccupation. Which leads to more worry about what might happen, how bad it could feel, or how awful everything may turn out. Our inner peace is nowhere to be found.
This is discursive thinking, an endless mind loop of self-indulgent, 'What about me?' thoughts. 'I, I, I …' thoughts prevail and we just can’t seem to make the chatter stop.
Being able to catch ourselves in the midst of this is key to maintaining inner peace. We can learn to pause, observe, and name what is happening to us. In my own life, because I create magazine columns, books, and blogs, I get caught up in what I have come to call “Writing Mind.” This is my unique mind chatter pattern, one that can easily pull me into feelings of anxiousness or overwhelm because there is always so much to do! With intention and practice, I am learning to name this pattern when it begins, then turn my attention in another direction to make discursive thinking stop.
How about you? What might your mind-looping pattern be? Is it worry? Fear? Reworking old conversations? Rehearsing new ones? It really does not matter what the pattern is, the point is to recognize it, name it, and transform it.
Redirecting the Loop
We begin by redirecting our thoughts, focusing our attention on something else—actually someone else. We can get outside of ourselves by thinking about another person. Putting our attention on “the other” works wonders by creating new feelings of ease, gratitude, and love.
Sit quietly for this short meditation. Breathe deeply and easily and bring to mind someone you love. Imagine them in your mind’s eye, happily going about their day. What do you see them doing? What do you desire for them? What good thoughts, prayers, or acts of blessing can you send their way? Spend some time with this dear one, holding them in heart and thought.
Now, notice how much better you feel; more centered and calm you are just thinking about your dear one. By shifting your attention from 'What about me?' to 'What about them?' you have raised your energetic “vibration” from self-absorption to other-care; from preoccupation to compassion.
This is an act of re-aligning ourselves with the highest virtues of Spirit—love and compassion—by focusing on the well-being of another, instead of worrying about our own. It is a process that evens out our mental terrain—from wild to meandering to ambling. In no time, we have enhanced our own well-being!
Choose inner peace by choosing to focus on “other love.” Truly, inner peace may be just one loving thought away.
Now, does your heart have anything to say?
As always, I am eager to hear ...

This holiday season I am sending you and yours many blessings—Peace, Love, Abundant Joy! No matter what tradition you hail from, no matter how you celebrate this season, may happiness be yours.
All Love,
Jan

Thank you, Jan. I love the meditation. And it's so simple. It could happen in a long shopping line or in the car. It's just a good reminder. Blessings this week...
This meditation IS perfect for this time of the year. So many opportunities to spend focusing on the "others". I hope that you have a blessed holiday with your family.
Jan,
Many blessings to you and your family this holiday season. Your site a place of comfort and peace, and that is also my hope for you today and always.
And thinking of others, what a beautiful way to offer a silent gift to another...and be filled with the love that offers back.
"Inner peace may be just one loving thought away." A nice motto to remember, Jan. Sometimes we forget how near, and easy, reaching that peace may be. That's all it takes, it's just up to us to make that crucial decision to think those loving thoughts :)
Hi Jan - have a lovely time with the family and enjoy the time off, as such.
Thanks for this meditative thought I intend in the New Year to begin this process. I seem to be able to help others, but often don't make myself aware at times of my own challenges.
To clear my decks and deck my brain out in clarity of thought, create space for meditation, exercise, so I can move forward out of the cloud of muddle into the light of the path ahead.
Thank you - blessings to all your family and you -

I love this, Jan! Thank-you so much for sharing! :) hugs, Jen
Yes, what a gift we give ourselves to focus on others. Now and always, very Mother Theresa-esque.
Hope you have a wonderful week off, Dear Jan, and if you'd like -- pop into my blog to hear my singing Christmas card to you all, I'll be posting it tomorrow.
xoxo
Beautiful and helpful guidance as always Jan! May your holidays be filled with love, joy, peace and lots and lots of PRESENCE!
gentle steps,
Laura
Your blog is always so filled with peace and love! I love the meditation. Thank you.
Happy Holidays!
Hi Jan! This is another favorite I know I will use often! THANK you! What a gift you are!
How lucky for you to be in a warm place for the winter. I often go online and look at property in Fla. just to see GREEN anything come about February! I tend to fuss over my house plants a lot!
Have a delightfully joyous holiday!

My mind pattern happens to be judgement or fear, usually both. Redirecting the thoughts to someone else is brilliant. I'll try it! For me, creating allies also helps. The trees, the moon, angels, mermaids, earth maidens, people who understand my path are all there when I am suffering.
Hi Jan! This is a wonderful meditation idea, thank you! I get caught in these mental loops, too; your suggestion to focus on the other rather than I, I, I makes so much sense!
Happy holidays to you!! Xxoxoxo, Jodi
Another very powerful meditation, Jan. The process of focusing positive thoughts on others and away from myself is very healing (not to mention much safer in the crowded stores and busy traffic :-)
Giving of myself (time, talents, treasures) gives me so much peace. I feel like I'm helping to heal the world one person, one good deed at a time.
May your holidays be full of JOY and PEACE and may you radiate these virtues to all those around you as you have here with us.
All Love, Julie
Jan...
yes, that turn is such a simple one to make, right there all the time, and yet we can think it is so very far away when we are swept up in those thoughts that seem so incredibly dominant... this is a beautiful reminder to take a moment and just stop... make a turn... and you are there...
happy holidays to you and your family... thank you for your lovely card and for bringing all that you do of love, joy and peace into the world...
xo
All the very best to you for a wonderful holiday season filled with all you desire most.
Blessings,
Carolynn
P.S. I love you too. *smile*
I thank you all for your beautiful comments. I am so glad that this meditation touched your heart.
This year has been one of powerful blessings, the best of which has been a new world of friends and kindred spirits through my two blogs. I have learned much from you who are so faithful to your spiritual paths. We do bless one another by our very presence don't we? We hold each others' stories tenderly in our hearts, and, truly, who could ask for anything more...
May the holidays bring you as much joy as you have brought to me this year! I love you all!
This meditation is perfect for the holidays -- thank you for sharing your wisdom. I wish you a very Happy Holidays special lady:)))
Hi Jan,
Just stopping by with Christmas greetings, hoping you have a wonderful Christmas, and a happy and healthy New Year! The blogs have been fun this year, yes quite a journey. Looking forward to more of the same in '10 :)
Blessings to you Jan and thank you for an inspirational blog. Christmas is indeed a time to focus on others and ask ourselves 'what can I do for him/her?' In fact, if you were to choose one rule or motto to live by, this would be it. Practising this simple thing will bring much happiness and connection to our lives.
Jan a beautiful meditation for the season...and the exact thing we all need in this time of feelings turmoil.
Thank you fro your beautiful gifts...all will be cherished just like you :)
Lots of love and Seasons Greetings,
Zeenat
i am wisshing yoo a very very hoppy Christmiss!!
i real real lieking yoo, jan.
hoo-woo.
Wishing you and yours all the blessings of this holy season, Jan. I am grateful for you.
I am fortunate that I was raised to always think of others; we always volunteered, helped others, opened doors, gave up our seat, shared with those who had less. It's how we were raised and I know of no other way. The Divine never thinks of what the Divine needs or wants; to be truly living with our own Divine Consciousness our hearts must be other-directed, sending Love always and always sending Love.
Sending Love to you, Jan!
a little late to the party... but wanted to wish you well for this season Jan
may the week off hold many memory making moments for you and yours
My heart absolutely has something to say and it's that this meditation is wonderful! Indeed, I find that whenever I step outside of myself to serve another in any capacity, I'm instantly energized. I could have been practically imploding beforehand, getting so caught up in my own senseless thought patterns, but the minute I show up for another person, the energy shifts palpably.
Thank you, Jan! And I hope you enjoyed a fabulous Christmas week and are gearing up for an amazing New Year!
Love to you!
Hi Megan,
I am glad to hear that you have noticed this difference in yourself and how the "vibration" of focusing on others works. Isn't it amazing? Blessings to you for a stellar New Year too!
