28-Day Meditation Challenge! Join Me?
New Year's blessings to you! And blessings upon this new adventure I'm launching here.
Two years ago, the Buddhist magazine, Tricycle, launched a 28-day campaign they titled "The Big Sit."
When I learned about it, I thought to myself, What a fabulous idea! One full month of meditating, once each day. I imagined people all over the world meditating together in this way and knew this could be very cool.
But did I do it? Nooooooo... I tried, and I let the practice fall away. I still meditate, but not everyday. It seems there are always excuses to keep me from doing what's good for me.
This year feels different. I have a blog. I have you. We have each other. And I'd like to try it again. This year with all of YOU. What do you think?
After I penned my last post (scroll down to read), during one of those 5:00 a.m. Muse whooshes, the idea came that with your help, and the help of other experienced meditators, I could break through my issue of "Meditation Abandonment." I got very excited just thinking about it. So here's my plan:
Here, at Awake is Good, for 28 days (beginning January 3, cutting us some slack to get through the holidays) we'll have our own version of "Commit to Sit." Though—and this is the fun part—we won't just be sitting. We'll be exploring meditation in all its many forms, from many different spiritual traditions. No chance at boredom here!
And, after 21 days, we will (hopefully) have created a new habit. For that is exactly what it takes to undo old ways of being and launch effective, new ones—3 weeks, 21 days. (That leaves 7 days to bask in the glory...)
I'm staging a free e-course here, if you will, for how to meditate AND how to keep on meditating when you feel frustrated, or feel like quitting and running away to a far off country where they've never heard of meditation (though I don't think there is one).
And guess what? I won't be the only one sharing/teaching. I'll be calling upon other bloggers who have successful meditation practices to help us along. I'll take your questions and issues to some of the experts—yes, real meditation experts and teachers from a variety of traditions—and get the answers for what ails you.
I'll log my daily progress (what kind of meditation I did that day, roadblocks, breakthroughs, awarenesses, etc.) and will invite you to do the same. For the next 30 days, this blog will become a sangha so that we can support one another as we journey inward.
Part way through the month, I'll host a (free) teleconference where we can all chat about our experiences so far. We'll hear others' voices for the first time. It will be like a blogging reunion! (I'll make sure the call is recorded and posted as a podcast for those of you who can't be present live.)
And guess what else? There may be a surprise guest or two, book giveaways, and, if I manage my time well, and learn the technology, a podcast of a guided meditations offered by moi.
Does this vow/course sound as wonderful to you as it does to me? I hope so because I really need to do this for me, with you as my witness (shades of Scarlett O'Hara here) and if you desire, as my new meditation pals (dharma buddies).
For in the new year, I really do want to get to know myself better, be happier, more peace-filled, and when I take time for meditation I am. I am also more calm, clear, and wise, and who doesn't want more of that?
To get us started and pointed in the right direction, here are some recent thoughts about meditation from a dear blog friend Laura at Shine the Divine.
Jan,
I love how in this vow you have taken you have completely opened to compassion by allowing for variety. This is how I operate too. Often the recommendation in meditation is to stick to one set ritual practice...Like you I prefer a broader approach. As long as there is a daily practice, it doesn't matter what it is. We are omnivorous creatures...we derive nutrients from many forms of sustenance...so it follows (at least for me) that our spiritual health is best cared for by listening to the little voice inside that says "today chanting is what I need...in this moment my breath will be my teacher...this morning awareness of my shifting emotions will offer me greater self acceptance...for the next 20 minutes walking with attentiveness will guide me in being more present"...and so on. This to me feels like it honors the shifting needs we all have, and still fits within the parameters of a vow to meditate.
I am honored to be witness to your vow.
Now that's what I'm talking about! Thank you, Laura. Words after my own heart. They express my hopes for this meditation challenge that we will do so with compassion and self-acceptance—and creativity.
So, dear bloggie friends. What think ye? Are you willing to join me now?
Remember, each of us will be doing this 28-Day Meditation Challenge in the privacy of our homes. No obligation to comment here, only if you want to. If during the course of the month, you'd like to connect with me privately, please do. Just visit my website: awakenedliving.com, and send me a note via the Contact Box.
I'll sign off today with a thought on meditation by Alan Watts.
“We could say that meditation doesn't have a reason or doesn't have a purpose. In this respect it's unlike almost all other things we do except perhaps making music and dancing. When we make music we don't do it in order to reach a certain point, such as the end of the composition. If that were the purpose of music then obviously the fastest players would be the best. Also, when we are dancing we are not aiming to arrive at a particular place on the floor as in a journey. When we dance, the journey itself is the point, as when we play music the playing itself is the point. And exactly the same thing is true in meditation. Meditation is the discovery that the point of life is always arrived at in the immediate moment.”
As always, I welcome your thoughts ...
(Again, to join the Challenge, just leave a comment here and I will add your name to the Roster. Or, send me a private e-mail through the Contact Box at my website: www.awakenedliving.com. I will confirm your participation here in the comments or via e-mail.)

Jan, I saw your comment on Christine's (BlissChick) blog and wanted you to know you have a kindred. I have also incorporated a fair share of Buddhist practices into my spiritual life and live in the South ... enough said. (I also seem to recall your telling me at some point that you were raised Lutheran, as was I.)
Blessings to you on your journey, especially when the road gets tough.
Happy New Year Jan! I already have a daily meditation practice and I only missed one day all year, but it is loose and sometimes I just sit and set my intentions or do blessings for others or daydream. I have a very hard time stopping thoughts, so any hints in that direction would be wonderful!
Much luck in your new daily meditation practice! You can do it!
XOXO
I am very much of the "meditation is an intent not a posture" school, as you know, Jan.
My daily movement practices (and they widely vary day to day) all bring me to that eternal, still point. I don't have to sit in silence to get there -- sometimes a bit of Michael Jackson even helps. :)
And just when I thought there was noooooo way I could possibly think about learning to meditate, much less meditate on a regular basis, you go and make this great offer to help me learn "how to" and encourage me at every step along the way. Okay, here goes. I'm in.
And Happy New Year, Jan!
i just signed up for the meditation challenge. can't wait! hugs!!
Hi Jan .. I endorse Sharon's comment absolutely .. count me in: I have a week of travel - so life will be a bit hectic .. but I'll do .. especially as it can be flexible - brilliant & you're there for us .. guiding us through ..
Thank you - good start for 2010

What a great idea! I used to meditate every day but for some reason stopped. This will help me focus and committ to meditate for 28 days and after that I'm sure I don't want to stop. Thank you!
Linnea,
I appreciate our kindredness! I remember our conversation about the religion of our childhoods. May we continue to embrace one another (all of us!) for the spiritual paths we choose...Blessings to you, too!
Annie,
Happy New Year to you! I am so impressed and delighted that you missed only one day of meditation all last year. Gasho (deep bow in Taoist tradition)! We may have some questions for you, dear heart, of how you stay faithful, especially in challenging times. But we will definitely be talking about "stopping" thoughts...actually, just developing a new relationship with them. xo
This is one of the most wonderful things you are doing. Only in meditation have I found true acceptance of myself and everyone else. I've found that an open heart does not mean a perfect human being, but a being who accepts all imperfections. I'm happy and grateful to be a part of this!
Jan, this is something I do daily.
At times it takes a different form then just sitting quietly.
I will be joining you.
I enjoy your encouraging thoughts...they so many times seem to mimick my mood or fit into what is happening to me. I have already decided to meditate every day SO, this will help keep me on track. Thank you and count me in too. :-) LIZ
I believe there are no mistakes...and, I landed here today...so I'm in...smiles.
Christine,
Your comment bears witness to one of the reasons I appreciate your journey so. I am hoping you will be one of my "guest" experts and help all to understand how movement can be a form of meditation. I will be in touch!
Sharon,
Oh good! Believe me, if I, the Queen of Busy Mindedness can, any one can. I am sure we can find some ways for you to quiet yourself and experience some success meditating. :-)
Melita,
Welcome. I am glad you will be on board with us. Yeah!
Hilary,
Even with travel I am sure we can help you find some ways to connect with inner quiet and begin this deeper journey you've been wanting to embark upon for a while now. Glad you are here!
Helena,
You sound like the perfect candidate for this "experiment." Thrilled you are on board!
Mermaid,
Your words are stunningly beautiful and the perfect testimonial to the power of meditation. "Only in meditation have I found true self-acceptance...." And, yes, it naturally opens our hearts to others. Overjoyed you will be traveling with me here...
Okay Jan. Wow, talk about "embrace". I'm in. Delightfully so:)
Oh my goodness Jan, I've been busy with my family these past weeks (as is appropriate) and have not been as blog conscious/focused as I usually am so when I found your message on my blog this morning I was completely taken aback... I could feel a flush of warmth rising from my heart up through my face...a heart smile.
I can't believe you felt my words to you important enough to repeat and to share as part of the kick off to this wonderful 28 day community endeavor. Well I'm in, for sure. Setting this up as a community of meditators in this way is brilliant. On-line sacred community. I'm physically alone so often and preparing mentally as much as I can for the girls to go back to school and for my husband to be in office (as opposed to working from home) more again after vacation now that I am able to be more independent in the house ...and this is what I was longing for...without even realizing it! Sacred community. Yes. How blessed we all are to be part of an expansive sacred community.
Thank you Jan,
gentle steps,
compassionate steps,
forgiving steps,
tearful steps,
joyful steps,
inner-outer-loving steps
even when we are sitting still.
may it be so
Laura
Happy New Year, my friend! I have so enjoyed getting to know you better through your book and blog this year, and have been proud to introduce you to new friends too.
Thanks for the inspiration for the daily meditation practice. I need it. Right now, I am watching the sun beaming on a lovely snow scene outside my window ...
One Woman,
Good for you! A daily meditation practice is obviously serving you well, my soulful friend. Happy to have you here!
Liz,
Holy synchronicity! I backtracked to your site and you did indeed post (earlier than I did) about your intention to meditate daily. Love it! Welcome. :-)
Ellen,
Welcome to you, too! I am thrilled you landed here and you found this invitation and you are willing to accept. Yes!
Hi Jan,
I, like Linnea, followed you here from your comment on BlissChick's blog. I've let my yoga practice slide the past two weeks during the busy holidays, but am resolved to embrace it again daily and fully intend to incorporate meditation as part of my daily practice. So I will be joining you as well!
Joy,
Oh, good. I am delighted you will be here. Now we are really sailing together! May the breezes of compassion fill our sails...
Laura,
Your understanding of sacred community touches my heart. My hope when I created my blogs in 2008 was for this holy purpose. That those who were meant to would find their way together, lend support, a human version of divine embrace. I am thrilled you will be part of this journey. We ALL need a beloved community, often when we don't even know it ourselves. Blessings...and mucho xo
Jan,
I came to your blog through Laura's Shine the Divine Blog ~
Thank you for sharing this challenge and opportunity with us! I have been hoping to "refocus" on my own spirtuality this year and this is the perfect jump start to the year. I have practiced meditation in the past but I have a hard time staying consistent and focused, I am hopeful that doing it "together" for a time will be the encouragement I need.
I am looking forward to beginning ~ perhaps I will even start a day early :-)
Many Blessings!
Cindy,
Happy New Year to you, too! Yes, this time in your life is a bit stressful and wearying so meditation could definitely be a boon. I hope this growing community, its wisdom and support will help. xo
Carrie,
Welcome! Yes, it is SO easy to let our practices slide during busy times, isn't it--even though we now how much it will benefit us. I am glad you will be joining us here and we welcome your wisdom.
How wonderful! I try to sit once a day - but my practice has fallen off, as can easily happen. I was thinking that one of the things I wanted to do this year was to join a meditation group. I put it out to the Universe on New Year's eve. Well - I never thought I would find it here - and yet this makes great sense. So yes, I'm in!
I like to sit in the morning and as I'm in New Zealand I'll probably be ahead of you and wonder how this will work? It is the 3rd here already and so I will go off now and sit. I'm going to start using a little journal I keep in my meditation space to record my thoughts. I guess I can comment tomorrow - a day behind (for me)?
Thanks for hosting this - a great idea! I look forward to sharing our insights.
OK...I will try it! I have not meditated in a long long time..and maybe this is just what I need to do as I bloom this year. I am looking forward to this journey! Thank you for setting this up for us. Blessings to you Jan!
Jan, I'll commit to my morning infusion! ;) and open my mind to more meditation as you share here! I find that so often meditation has been limited. I enjoy Jon Kabat-Zinn style personally which is more enchanting the visual imagination to explore with words and images that which is in the deeper dwelling place. I want to incorporate a special place, more sacred objects - a special altar like this year also! :) I'm listening! luv Jen
Lola,
Welcome to you! What you say is so true for many of us. We lose steam in our practices without community or connection with others. I am greatly looking forward to meditating daily with all of you. I can hardly wait to get started myself. I have been doing two forms of meditation in small doses the past few days--I'll write more of this tomorrow. The countdown begins, so, yes, get started early, by all means!
Stoneweaver,
Sound like the Universe may just have granted your wish, eh? I'm delirious that you came here and found companions for this next leg of your journey. Yes, I know it is the 3rd in NZ and I hope you will get started. You will by no means be behind--you will be one step ahead of others of us, which is just great. I will try to get a post up each morning by 10:00 am. fyi.... Blessings!
Sharmila,
Glad to have you on board! I, too, love a flexible approach to meditation so we will explore to our heart's content! Setting up a more formal meditation space or altar sounds like a beautiful idea. I encourage you to go for it. I actually have 2 "altars" that focus my attention and prayers.
No limits here on the blog. Our options are as wide open as a cloudless sky. :-)
Wow, Jan, what a super fun idea!!
A teleconference? You are so smart. I have no idea how to go about one of those.
I can certainly sit still and meditate 5 minutes a day each day.
I'll be checking back in!!
xo
I'm with Jannie on this one...five minutes a day shouldn't be too difficult..(should it???) Anyway, I'm in. This will be good...
Jannie,
Oh, this WILL be fun. I appreciate your commitment of going for 5 minutes a day.
Lance,
You too! Magic can begin to happen in five...or we'll stumble through our way together and get to ten with ease. Glad you are on board!
Hugs to you both.
Something I feel helped me get rolling with sitting meditation was starting off really slow - literally just a few minutes. And I never did it as long or often as I read I was "supposed" to. I think you have to make it fit your particular circumstances and what ends up feeling right.
For me, that turned out to be at most once a day and at some periods of my life once every other day. And the length of time I worked up to was usually just 20 to 30 minutes, but that was plenty to make a difference...
I accept with every fibre of my exsistence!
this will be wonderful!
Paul,
Wonderful thoughts. I think so much of our hesitation to explore meditation—and our issues to keep on with it once we've started—is so often rooted in what you said...too many shoulds or oughts. We've set ourselves up for disappointment, self-judgment and failure by listening to what so many others say. Certainly there are experts and wise others we can listen to but, ultimately, it comes down to what resonates with you—what takes you higher, deeper, etc. I salute your position and, as always, wish you every blessing.
Love, love...
Justin,
Welcome! I am glad you are in and have added your name to our "sangha" list. Blessings...
Jan,
I've tried to meditate in the past and never got very far. Your post inspired me to try again, so....
Count me in!
Jan,
I apologize for not getting back to you before now; I was visiting my mother today.
I would love to participate in the 28-day challenge. My meditation practice has fallen by the wayside; this should help me get back on track. On to the next entry, then ....
Please count me in :)
mibec,
Welcome! We will hold the highest intention that you creae a practice that brings you peace and joy.
Linnea,
Thanks for clarifying. :-) Another intention, that your practice is resurrected and revitalized and that it nurtures you on all levels—body, mind and spirit. :-)
Tabitha,
I am glad you are here, dear hearted one. Enjoy!
Jan ~
Please count me in! I look forward to the next 28 days of meditation (and those to follow!) Peace and Blessings to you and everyone that accepts the challenge! This will be a year of JOY!
Lori

I am thrilled that you are here! I will hope that the days ahead offer your soul sustenance and enjoyment. It will be good to journey with you in this way. Love to you!
I'm joining this challenge a few days late, but, please, do count me in! Knowing there are many others out in the world doing this practice helps me focus. Many blessings to all on our mindful, breath-full journey!
Lucinda,
Welcome, glad you have decided to join us. Just read through the previous posts and you should be all set. I am hopeful that you will find sustenance here. Blessings!
Hi Jan!
Happy new year to you! I am just now catching up on blogging...what a fantastic idea this 28-day challenge is!! I'm in!! Thank you for guiding us through meditation and being open about your experiences. It always helps to commit to something new with other people by our sides.
Joining late, but I'm in!
Joining late also. Thanks for this wonderful opportunity.
Rebecca
Carmen and Rebecca, too!
Welcome. Never late. I would suggest though that you read back through all the posts as we are now on Day 5. That should get you up to speed. :-) Nice to know you both. Breathe on...
Hi Jan:
Just saw this and joining you late - what a wonderful way to meditte in community. Thank you for this opportunity and for your encouragement to honor myself and each other in such a deep way..
You're always in my heart and I treasure our relationship.
xoxo
Hi Char,
Lovely to have you here. (You are always in mine, too.) I will add your name to the Roster. If you can, it might be helpful to read back through the previous posts to catch up. Chime in when you can to let us know how you are doing. We've got a great community here. Nearly 100 committed meditators strong, with God knows how many just reading. :-) Hugs!
Hi Jan,
I stumbled on your blog just now. I would like to join you and others. I will definitely look into previous posts. Thank you very much for sharing this opportunity.:)
Paula,
Welcome! Not too late to join. Dive on in, the meditation is fine. I'll add your name to the Roster. Breathe on with ease. :-)
A little late, but better late than never! I found this through a link from KindOverMatter blog.. I'd love to join!
-Chelle
Chelle,
Welcome, and not too late at all. Dive in, breathe deep, make a commit to sit. You may want to read through the previous posts. They will help you get your cushion settled. :-) Let me know if you need any help. Blessings!
I'm in! Thanks for the meditation challenge.
Starting late, but what the heck; now is the best time to start, right? If not now, then when?
Hi Maggie!
Yes, better late, but not really late. Just begin today, try to sit everyday (in whatever you do that) and read back through the previous posts to catch up. That should do it. Glad you are here with us. Welcome!
Oh Jan, I was away from the blog world for a while, as the holidays are filled with so much emotion. Happy emotions of Birthdays and celebrations, and reflective heartfelt emotions of family members that passed during this time of year. I always get a little melancholy after the emotional roller coaster called "the holidays". I saw your site here but had already missed the beginning of the 28 days so I figured I'd wait and catch up with your site "later". You see, I needed your site and meditation but was listening to a darker part of my "self" for a while. There is something about winter that stirs emotions inside. It is a time of dark skies and sometimes dark moods. Yet it is a time soft beauty found in the sparkle of pristine snow, deer tracks across the yard, and the flash of bright red as a cardinal flies across the white of winter. It is time for me to join in here. Read the older posts and then start fresh with your vow of meditation. Blessings to you and yours dear soul. Love and Light, Nina P
Dear Jan,
This is just what I need. I am a friend of Laura Hedgefield's..and I'm glad she blogged about your meditation challenge. This is a perfect companion to my 365 Days of Gratitude-Joy practice I've been doing for 17.5 days now - at least via blog. My epxerience of life has changed already! And... Don't ya just love that the world is a neighborhood, thanks to the internet? - It's good to meet you. I will add your link on my blog..to keep me connected visually. Blessings to you..
Cheryl,
Welcome! Glad you have joined us and, yes, it does seem like your Gratitude Year is a good fit with what is happening here. I wish the best with it. Gratitude is such a life-changing practice, one I cultivated myself years ago through the book "Simple Abundance." I wish you the best with this!
And thank you for the link. You are officially added to our Roster here. Please let me know if you need any extra help. You can catch up by perusing the previous posts and breathing...... (LOL)
This is great! It's too bad I only chanced upon it now. I would have liked to join this. I wonder if starting now and backtracking on all your previous posts will work just fine...
Rachel,
Thanks for stopping by. Though the Challenge is officially over, yes, going back through the posts would easily help you jumpstart a meditation practice. Let us know how it goes or if I can be of further assistance. Blessings.
Hi Jan .. can Rachel and I do it together? I haven't started yet - if we set a date .. I'm away Thursday night/Friday morning - otherwise I'm around and feeling ready to start ..
Thanks!!!! Cheers Hilary
Hi Hilary,
I appreciate your enthusiasm. I might suggest that you e-mail Rachel and see if she is willing? Actually there are a number of people who are just winding their way through now-late starters-which is great! If you want to go ahead on your own and get started, I can mentor you, support you along the way. Just send me an e-mail each day and I will respond and be your cheerleader....It's never too late to begin. xo
Hi Jan .. I don't think I published it!! So I'll start again .. I'd love to do it with you .. if that's ok. So I'll start Monday .. I'm going by train so I can take a couple of books with me .. and get into the habit of reading every day again.
Then I can do each day, email you, read everyone's comments for that day .. and progress with you along the way - sounds great ..
Thanks so much .. sounds really good .. bye for now - Hilary
Hilary,
This sounds like a wonderful idea. I am on the train with you! Just e-me privately and we will go from there. I believe you have that address, right? If not, just contact me through my website (contact box) at awakenedliving.com. I will respond back. Then you will have it. Ready to roll whenever you are. Hugs!
