Day 28: Meditation Challenge ~ "Congratulations, Good Meditators!" says Diana Lang

Welcome, to my 28-Day Meditation Challenge!

On Day 10 of the Challenge, yoga and meditation teacher, Diana Lang, joined us. She welcomed in our Challenge and gave us some wise advice for getting started. (You can read that post here.)

Diana's back, and this time she's offering us hearty congratulations and more wise words on how we can best frame our meditation experience of the last month. I hope everyone will read every word of this post (and not just speed read through!) as it is the wisest, most wonderful thing, I have read in eons! No exaggeration. Please—take a breath, read, and enjoy—with a wide open heart. :-)

Dear, dear Meditators,

If there is one thing I would like to leave you with from your experience on this 28-day spiritual adventure, it would be to be gentle with yourselves in your evaluation of yourself about it.

Meditation is a process of self-discovery and awakening. We can be so critical of ourselves when we are learning something new. We don’t give ourselves a chance to get it. If I dropped you off tomorrow in Italy I would not expect you to be able to speak fluently. But as a teacher, I would also know that you would learn the language quickly, and that the more you were immersed in it, the faster that learning would be. In learning new things we sometimes create unclimbable mountains of expectation of what we think ought to happen. We can have unrealistic expectations about the goal, how we should get there and even what the goal is. But let me powerfully reassure you that any bit of anything that you understood during this process is valuable. In meditation there is no goal per se. There is just the doing of it.

In my book, Opening to Meditation, I write, “Meditation is like a hammer and a nail and it works if you use it.” Meditation is purely practical. All you need to do is do it. As best you can, give yourself a chance to go through a learning curve.

During these 28 days you may have found that what kept you motivated was an inspired piece you read, or a commentary by Jan or by another fellow meditator. If you got a thing from this experience, know that this one thing can change your life. Value it. Use it. Apply it. If it was a reminder to take a deep breath, use a mala or a mandala, concentrating on a candle, chanting, prayers, hymns, and more, all of these ways are a step along the path. Don’t underestimate the value of this experience. It is a sacred path that you have embarked on. You have to trust your journey. Trust your walking. Trust your Self.

Whatever time you were able to do meditate for during these 28 days, know that “it counts”. There is an amazing and beautiful spiritual principle at work here. Any little or a lot of training in meditation is yours through all time and space. You will never lose it. It will always, always be with you.

Because awareness sticks. You can’t lose it. You don’t have to try and remember what happened, or write it down, or get a grade for it. Awareness is. It becomes a part of you.

Whether you meditated every single day or just once, be glad that you gave yourself this gift of awareness. It’s not about quantity of consciousness but quality of consciousness. More time in meditation doesn’t automatically make you more enlightened. It is the quality of your consciousness that spiritual success is built from.

So even if you only meditated one time or ten times out of the 28 days, know that this is part of you now – part of who you are, part of your spiritual lineage and your birthright. And when you meditate again it will be right there where you last left it and it will have grown on its own some too!

Meditation will change your life. Every little nanosecond that you spend “in consciousness” adds to the depth and presence of who you are. Meditation, and the world that comes with it, is a sacred spiritual journey that unfolds to you, step by sacred step. When we meditate we are not only helping ourselves find inner balance and peace, we become part of the healing solution for our planet. Our own personal balance makes us like a living lighthouse in the world. So the gift we gave ourselves becomes a gift that extends past our own life.

Meditate and watch your life unfold in perfect rhythm and harmony. Meditate and remember the light of who you are. Be glad you gave yourself the time and space to create consciousness. And I know I speak for Jan when I say this, keep meditating. It is one of the most valuable things you will ever do.

Love and blessings,
Diana Lang

Diana, I cannot thank you enough for creating this send-off message for us. My heart is so deeply touched—and opened—by what you have shared here. You encourage us onward in such a profound, yet practical, way. And what a joy it has been to be encouraged by you and to get to know you better!

I will keep keepin' on. I hope the rest of us do, too. The world does need the light from our radiance, now more than ever, and meditation can help amplify that radiance. Thanks and a million blessings to you, Diana!

And I will be posting my final thoughts and learnings re. the Challenge on Monday, so stay tuned!

As always, I welcome your thoughts ...

Love and blessings,
Jan

Hi Jan,
That was a beautiful message by Diana.Happy I could read it before I go to bed(it is 11.30p.m).She has rightly told that the experience of awareness will always stay with us .We learn with whatever little we do.We have to just do it!Each time we meditate we grow in self awareness.
I have published the 3rd week squidoo lens today. You can read it here-- 7-Different-ways-to-do-your-Meditations .
It is amazing how these 28 days have passed with new knowledge gathered each day.Thank you very much for the exposure.I still have to do the final week's messages to complete my set of 4 lenses on our 28 day meditation. Will do it this week.
Wishing you peace and joy,
sema

As I read this today, tears filled my eyes. My prevailing thought is "what a precious gift". This challenge you presented to us, the time and energy you and your contributors spent in guiding us along, and life in general. Thank you!
The reminder to be gentle...whew...I needed that reminder.
A life changing thing I took away from this is "God is breathing me" focusing on those words and using my own inflection helped me to overcome the barrier of seeing the Divine within me, of the last residue of unworthiness drilled into my head by critical comments built up from others. I feel worthy, I feel blessed, I feel whole. Huge considering in the midst of this I am fighting cancer and once again--hopefully permanently--healing in a most healthy manner.
Words cannot express my joy, my gratitude, my love as my heart opens even farther and is ready to embark on this new chapter in my life. Thank you for contributing to that in such a positive, blessed way:)

This has been a life-changing experience for me. I feel the meditation time I have given myself has benefited my life around me.
I have a much different clarity of mind and positive attitude that has even been contagious at my workplace.
Thank you, Jan, all you expert writers and all you meditating participants for showing me a new life.
"never underestimate this value" Amen to that!
Blessings on us all,

Sema,
I,too, appreciate Diana's statement on awareness and how it grows us, bit by bit. I am glad that the Challenge supported you on your journey. And your Squidoo Lens will continue to lend support to others too. Thank you again for this. A majestic creation! I am going to go there now. :-)

Joy,
I am thrilled to know your life-changing moment from the Challenge. May that thought "God is breathing me," continue to sustain you in this time of great healing. Truly, may you be completely well soon with divine assistance. And our love and prayers too. :-)

It was nice to read Diana's message of encouragement. I had been feeling a bit down on myself because I wasn't as faithful to this 28 day challenge as I had hoped to be. But when I read Diana's words, I knew as I had in my heart all along, that every little bit counts.

Thank you for providing us all with this opportunity to learn and grow with support and community Jan!!

Annie January 31, 2010 11:00 AM

Thank you Jan, Thank you Diana, for this send off message. I have meditated for years, and will continue to do so, I most often have trouble with my racing mind, but I always show up and I am always glad I did :-). xoxoxo

Jan January 31, 2010 12:53 PM

Ms. Karmacoy,
I am glad that Diana's words spoke to you. It is, after all, about gentleness (and as you posted today) blended compassionately with routine. The more we do something like meditation the easier it gets and ANY effort is worth it. May your meditation practice continue to unfold and be blessed.

Annie,
Thank you! So glad you will stay faithful to your commitment to sit. :-) I was just reading Sakyong Mipham's "Turning YOur Mind into an Ally" and it is so very helpful in helping us make peace (and tame) busy mind. I love it...Be well!

If you got a thing from this experience, know that this one thing can change your life. Value it. Use it. Apply it.

Thank you so much for this challenge. Even though I only participated for 2 weeks, I feel that in those 2 weeks, I learned so much about meditation and about myself.

I learned that I may not meditate in the "sitting sense" every day. And I do not think that I have to in order to gain its benefits. Just like regular exercise, there will just be some days where I do not feel like sitting.

For me, I learned that meditation something that can become part of my everyday life - in small doses when I need it, AND larger doses on some days.

The other day I used meditation in small doses throughout the day. I didn't ever get the chance to "sit" but I felt the benefits of quick bursts of refocusing. I was very stressed about my observation at work from the moment I woke up. So as soon as I realized I was stressed I closed my eyes and took a few moments to "regroup" and focus on my breath.... "As I breathe in, I am calm....As I breathe out I am at peace"
After a few minutes, I felt calm and ready to start my day....keeping my mind in the present and choosing not to worry about the observation that was not for a few hours. As it got closer to the observation, I felt myself getting stressed again, so I did the same thing....a "regroup" using a few short minutes of meditation....breathing...concentrating only on breath....bringing myself back to the present. It was EXTREMELY helpful in helping me not waste my entire morning before the observation worrying. The time would come - why did I need to worry all morning?

Meditation was the perfect tool for getting me to refocus my mind to the present moment.

This really helped me see how I can use meditation in my daily life - thank you again for all of the wonderful posts each day - I learned so much from reading them and took so much away from this experience.

Peace and Love,
debbie

Jan,
Yesterday as I was out and about doing my errands after a long day at work. I stopped at my favorite little hiding place. It is a little park with a small moving body of water leading to a canal. There is a weeping willow tree that is in deep hibernation. I am drawn to this tree for some unknown reason. I popped in a new mediation cd and just sat in stillness for 45 minutes. This filled me with a peace I cannot put into words, but somehow I know you understand what I am saying.
Thank you for this wonderful experience. I am blessed to have shared this with you and all the others who post here. ~Marie

Debbie,
This is all such wonderful news AND self-observations of how meditation (even short bursts of it) are benefitting all aspects of your life. As you attest, I think one of the things we notice right away is newfound focus. Great! What I appreciate most about your journey--even though only 2 weeks old :-) -- is how open and willing and receptive you are. This is a fabulous trait to have because they we actually receive so much more than we could have ever imagined. I celebrate this blossoming in you. Kudos!

Marie,
Your mini-retreat sounds fabulous and look what happened! You opened up to something more and peace whooshed in. I am so happy to hear that this calm was yours--esp. with the busymindedness you've spoken of and the stress. I will hope that you can continue to take these little breaks more often and build up your inner peace reserves. :-) Blessings!

Rebecca January 31, 2010 6:05 PM

Thank you, Jan, for leading us on this amazing journey. Thanks to all the guest writers and those who shared their inspiring comments. I did keep my commitment to meditation although I wasn't able to check in here as often as I liked (I'm catching up with past posts, though, in small batches).

Two especially meaningful things for me: 1) the thought "God is breathing me" helped to center my meditation and to focus my priority at any given moment during the day; and 2) learning about the practice of Metta from you, Jan, even before this challenge is what helps me begin my meditation each day and on many days it is the only thing I manage.

Diane's words are so encouraging--
they remind me that this 'challenge' does not really have a beginning or an ending, but is ongoing. Thank you for bringing me to this awareness.

cherokeefox January 31, 2010 10:33 PM

I haven't been able to visit the meditation site every day since day 1 but have been keeping up the ritual. It's a part of my daily life now. I usually only find the time when going to bed but that is okay. I have tried different techniques here this month & have found them very useful. thanks for all your hard work & motivation!

Sharon January 31, 2010 10:58 PM

Jan, thank you for providing daily guidance for the 28-day meditation challenge, which was what I needed to keep going. Your encouragement and loving kindness led me to see that each day is a fresh start and a chance to try again. I have formed new habits which will stay with me.

Jan February 1, 2010 10:52 AM

Rebecca,
Thank you for sharing more about how the Meditation Challenge turned out for you, as well as the wonderful learnings you had. The two "pearls" you received are powerful—sacred breath and metta. I will hope that they continue to sustain you. May inner peace be yours. Truly!

Liz,
I am very happy to hear that a new meditation habit is yours. It's amazing how 28 days of faithfulness can shift something internally, isn't it? May the days and weeks ahead be ones of ease. Blessings!

Jan February 1, 2010 10:55 AM

Sharon,
What a beautiful testimony to your journey. I so appreciate you sticking with this, especially since you voiced that you had always "quit" in the past. You are in a powerful place in your journey right now and I am glad the Challenge played a part in that. May all your days unfold with equanimity. Keep on with a buoyant heart!

Lisa (Mommy Mystic) February 1, 2010 2:14 PM

'there is just the doing'. What a perfect end to an amazing series. Bravo to you, Jan, and all involved on what has been created here this month....XOXO Lisa

Carolynn February 1, 2010 2:29 PM

Wow. Thank you. Truly. I could feel Diana's 'being-ness' come through those words and the sense of calm and unconditional acceptance is truly a gift. What it must be like to be in her presence.

Jan, thank you for sharing yourself and your gift(s) with us all, as well.

I'm looking forward to this next leg of the journey.

Much Love,
Carolynn

Lisa,
Oh, thank you my dear "expert" friend. The kudos mean much. :-) It has been an extraordinary month. I appreciate everything you did to help us along the way. Namaste!

Carolynn,
Happy to know that Diana's energy was felt through the ethers. :-) Enjoy the warmth! Onward we go....into peace and joy.

Rochelle February 1, 2010 7:04 PM

Ohhh Jan, I miss checking in here every day and finding out what's up with all the meditators and what wonderful person or concept you have to share with us! How about a 352-Day Meditation Challenge?!? ;->

I am so grateful to have been the winner of Diana Lang's "Opening to Meditation" book and CD. The book was inspiring and I've listened to the guided meditations over a dozen times and I still get something new out of them each time and I really feel a difference in my sense of groundedness.

Thanks again for hosting this wonderful challenge and bringing us such a font of wisdom from yourself and other teachers.

xoxo

I have gotten on and off this meditation train, but am SO GLAD I got back on just as it was pulling into its last station.

Diana, your wisdom is deep and timely. We live in such a challenging world, and there are so many layers, beginning with our inner selves, our family, our neighbor's, extended family, the workplace, the county, the state, etc, etc. To go within during meditation, just to be present to out own turbulence and tranquility, gives us the ability to bring some presence into the world.

After meditating for over 2 years, I'm still humbled by the simplicity of the practice that I so complicate. I am so grateful for all the teachers, all the resources, all the sangha support. They all remind me to try to be open with my mind and heart. When I cannot, I indulge in compassion, lovingkindness, and as you so gracefully put it, gentleness.

Jan, my dear sweet dharma sister and sacred feminine spirit. You are a light from Michigan, a star I see in the night sky twinkling and winking at me whenever I am stuck. You know. You just do. It's that simple. And I love you. For this post, for all your posts, and for the radiant being behind them.

May you just be.

Nina P. February 2, 2010 10:28 AM

I came in late with busy thoughts and busy outside world. Each day there were awakenings as I let go and turned within. Outside stresses remain yet my inside stresses are flowing away... each breath... each chosen thought... each mantra... brought a river of Peace though my hectic mind/life.... I can go to the river anytime I want to rejuvenate my mind, body and soul, flow with the river re-center and find Peace, Answers, myself... I can rejoin Life Fuller, Richer, more Enlightened... I can flow with the hustle of life by stepping back and observing and finding The Way my road... Meditation has allowed me to continue on my Journey through the universe... Thank you Dear Jan and Friends.... Your guidance and wisdom come from the heart. Thank you for sharing. Blessings to you and yours. Love and Light, Nina P

Rochelle,
Thank you for this warm and wonderful embrace. I found I missed the Challenge too, though needed some space to "process." I am confident we will stay connected and continue to grow this community of kindred spirits who do desire to live in an awakened manner.

And I am just thrilled that Diana's book and CD has truly helped you. I wish we could have gifted one to everyone who participated in the Challenge. Enjoy!

Mermaid,
Thank you for your beautiful comments. I am glad that you got to the station on time too to read this post. Diana's wisdom rings clear and has much to say to us. I am so heartened that meditation continues to play a key part in your life and that it allows you to continue to embody your peace and your joy.

It is pure pleasure to be a dharma sister with you. I think that is the first time anyone referred to me in that way and it touches my heart so deeply. Thank you. Gassho. Bow to you...Love to you...

Jan February 2, 2010 1:34 PM

Nina,
Lovely thoughts. So glad you shared them. I am thrilled to know that meditation carries you-- that it allows you to walk with greater ease through all the days of your life. It DOES do that if we allow it to. Breathe on with joy!
