And Why Are You Here?

A humble life dedicated to a great purpose, becomes great.
~Paul Brunton, Perspectives

Isn't this a marvelous thought?

A simple question today, but one well worth asking ...

Is your life dedicated to a great purpose?

And, if so, what is it?

I'd love to hear ...

I'll go first.

At this moment in time I would say that the "great purpose" to which I have dedicated my life is to the cause of awakening (as may be evident from this blog :-). And what comes as a result of that is greater awareness of how important (life changing and globally vital) it is to live gently with ourselves, others, and the earth—all the while expressing lovingkindness. That's it in a nutshell. :-) Now what's yours???

My purpose these days is to live my life in a manner that is ethical, honest, open, positive, interested, and authentic.....and to be available to those who would like to live similarly, to encourage, and guide by way of my actions....smiles. (and I am sure that if I am wrong about this, it will become apparent)....smiles.

Did you read my post today??? LOL...honestly, I don't know!

Oh man, wouldn't I love to have the answer to THAT one!

suZen March 3, 2010 7:53 PM

At this moment in time I would have to say I feel my purpose is to encourage people to be the best that they can be at whatever they choose to do and to show, thru the way I live my own life, that life is a banquet, go out and TRY stuff, have fun with it and let yourself go - hence the title of my blog!

Jan March 3, 2010 8:35 PM

Ellen,
Marvelous to read. I celebrate your purpose! My favorite part of your answer though is the last sentence: and it you're wrong, it will become apparent. Oh, yes, life does seem to work that way. (wink)

Caroline,
Where you are is the perfect place to be. I trust the way will become clear when it is time.

(My own path, in terms of locales/housing is quite unclear right now. Clueless here. Trust is in order)

Hang in there, sweet lady.

Joy,
And I will pray that you do! Joy is a beautiful name. I'll check out your site, too, and thanks for being here. :-) Blessings!

Carolynn,
You will, trust me, or rather, trust in the Infinite (I know you do...) and all will become apparent in time (divine timing, that is). I'd love to hear your answer to this question in a year. (wink)

oh Jan this is so beautiful! I have been overthinking the details lately in the midst of feeling so much! But I am a visionary and so I tend to live backwards. I am learning to live forward with more courage and determination and let the past completely go for more energy and focus because I can see where I want to be --its just struggling through like the butterfly in getting there.

I want to give my heart 80/ and 20 to my overworked mind going forward! ;)

My purpose here is to encourage other souls on this journey and to create an atmosphere of warmth in hospitality: the essences of love, comfort and joy through creative projects, journaling and writing.

Sharing companions of insight for encouragement, nourishment and authentic development to surface the treasury of community.

To advocate and welcome in orphans and widows and the homeless, and to be an adoptive parent.

To provide nurturing qualities in health for the purpose of mirroring back wholeness --our true nature and to delight in mother earth as a herbalist.

everything of experience seems to build onto the purpose itself so that is why its all in portions. for example if I must have the courage to write and share and go through the process or advocacy won't work well, neither will future ministry with orphans.

It's all about building character and pushing through,..errr! so I really can't back out because I do want to be who I'm meant to become. We are each naturally rising, unless resisting the natural evolving process... so, this makes motivation the spirit and default solution to show up anyway and get through! ;)

((hugs)) thanks so much for this post and the photo and quote is so lovely! ~Sharmila

Hm, I think that at this moment in my life, it would be to spread awareness that we are all here as brothers and sisters living in the same home called earth. We need to live simply, love often and spread the Peace and Joy that lives inside each of us. I know it's a bit Pollyanna, but, it is where my heart and soul is leading me on my life's journey. Blessings dear Jan. Love and Light, Nina P

Jan,

I love the simplicity of this post, and yet the depth at which it reaches inside of me.

I believe that I am here to encourage people, in some form. It's been a journey to get to that point, and along that journey I have learned much about myself. If I can somehow touch another with words of encouragement, wisdom, love, and caring...there is great joy for me in those moments.

And Jan...I love so much what you have written about yourself. I see that clearly in you, and it is a beautiful gift you have to share...

Awakening is my purpose--I like to believe it is every being's inner purpose. Sharing the journey so it may help others--that's delightful as well!

Jan March 4, 2010 9:03 AM

suZen,
Your purpose is enticing and light-filled. Not to mention fun. How serious we all take ourselves and this life journey! You DO remind us to live and love well...xo

Jenn,
Your many purposes all seem to be rooted in one thing—deep love and care for others. Such a beautiful offering...

Nina,
Not Pollyanish at all. We are cut from the same cloth you and I. :-) And for the record, when I do think of you, this term you've used here —brothers and sisters—is what comes to mind. Your focus on us as a global family is marvelous...

Jan March 4, 2010 9:05 AM

Lance,
You definitely are an Encourager, with a capital "E." :-) Every interaction I've ever witnessed with you is one of encouragement, hope, and deep caring. Here's to your grand purpose!

Maggie,
Thank you! And thank you for being here.

RM,
Thank you, too. May the Spirit guide us all...

I'd like to think mine is about helping people to recognise and develop their own strength. People are stronger than they think, and have so much potential. Here's to purpose and endeavour!

Cindy La Ferle March 4, 2010 4:29 PM

I am not sure if I am dedicated to a "great" purpose. But I try every day to live as mindfully and kindly as possible, and to do a kind act, no matter how large or small, for someone else. I believe the little things DO add up to one large and abundant total!

Jan March 4, 2010 10:29 PM

Kaushik,
As you might guess, I resonate with your purpose. Awakening. Without it, where are we? Sleep-living, as a friend of mine put it. :-) May your purpose be blessed!

Haley,
A powerful purpose, as we definitely can use more strength as individuals. We can emerge so battered and bruised from life. People like you do inspire us onward. :-)

Cindy,
What comes to mind after reading your comment is "daily purpose." To do all the things you do, day in and day out, is powerful and do amount to grand things. Mother Teresa would agree...:-) Beautiful!

joanne March 5, 2010 5:52 PM

i think life's purpose can have many different meanings... ultimately, though, one's life purpose can be summed up by asking onself what is it do you want to be more about in every moment of your life, regardless of anything you are doing, where you are living, what work you are performing, etc.

i want to be about encouragement and giving to others, creating and helping others to create, compassion and understanding for everyone, and drawing myself ever more deeply into awareness...

Jan March 5, 2010 8:04 PM

Joanne,
The way you have reworded this is very powerful. "Purpose" seems to be what we want our life (overall, and in the end, perhaps?) to represent. A beautiful way to think about it.

And as for your purpose, a lovely calling, and one you are so very good at. :-)

mermaid March 5, 2010 10:06 PM

Mine is to look past fear and judgment to joy, gentleness, loving kindness, etc. In a larger sense, it is to awaken to the lovely me and inspire others to awaken to the lovely them.

Jan, it's no wonder I love you!

Cheryl Wright March 6, 2010 9:08 PM

I believe that my life purpose is to live holy, authentically, gratefully and passionately, sharing (through my writing) lessons I've learned to inspire others to live their life purpose, whatever it may be.

jchristin March 6, 2010 11:48 PM

I am here to allow my Light to touch others in ways that is healing, encouraging, or inspiring to them. When I am open in Faith, the Universe can make the impossible quite possible, and that is the gift I share with others. With the gifts of clarity and compassion I can help those who "wish to" face and then work through the very thing that thought they could not. Often I do that by example, but when asked I may share directly in a personal manner. In Love, and Peace. Which is quite contagious:)
I love reading the comments on this as well--awesome energy!

Jan March 7, 2010 8:23 AM

Mermaid,
The way you've shared this touches my heart... "To remember our loveliness," that famous line from the Galway Kinnell poem. (Loved it so much, in fact, I ended my book with it, but perhaps you knew that.) Your love and loveliness shine throgh. Thank you for your love. ;-)

Cheryl,
Such a confident purpose! To inspire and lead others to their own. And you do a beautiful job of that, no question. We are all blessed...

Joy,
The word that stands out is "healing." To embark on our journey with such passion that we heal ourselves, then others, by our very holy and whole presence. You are doing that. A joy to witness and be part of...

Hilary Melton-Butcher March 7, 2010 9:44 AM

Hi Jan .. at the moment my purpose is to be with my mother - included in that purpose .. is this huge learning curve - about ... illness, others' disabled and relatives, connections within and adjunct to hospitals various, families, death (of my uncle), people in general, blogging, social media and its technicalities, the openness and acceptance that is there in this great world of ours, meditation - getting there!, spirituality .. I can't believe how much is possible, if we care to "look on the bright side of life" - let alone all the things mentioned firstly by you, Jan, and other commenters that I shall now scan through - we are very fortunate people .. to have the life we have and we should all make the most of this moment ....

Marie March 8, 2010 2:19 PM

My first thought was "geez, I have NO idea what my purpose is". But this post challanged me to dig deeper within myself. It caused me to really ask myself this question and see if I had a real answer, an honest answer. I thought well, I am a mother, a wife, a sister, a friend...etc. And I am also a women in search of my true inner self and inner peace. With that thought, I realized my purpose is to BE exactly what I am seeking. If I am seeking peace, I must be peaceful. If I am seeking love, I must be loving. It reminds of the great Gandhi quote..."Be the change you want to see in the world". I think, that is my purpose.~Marie

Rochelle March 8, 2010 3:55 PM

It feels to me, right now, that my purpose is to learn how to open my heart and love.

Jan March 8, 2010 5:27 PM

Hilary,
You seem to have profound awareness of what "the call" is for you right now. Your clarity rings through. :-) Your last statement is powerful! "To all make the most of this moment." Thank you for this precious reminder. xo

Marie,
Another powerful awareness. As you may know the Gandhi quote for me is key, and you have captured its essence well. Yes, we must first be all that we desire. In fact, we already are. We just have to call it up from within ourselves, believe it and act on it. Blessings to you as you walk this path. :-)

Rochelle,
Truly a beautiful purpose. In the end it does seem that how well we have loved is all that matters.
