Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés Stirs Our Hearts on the Topic of "Sisterhood"
Welcome lovely friends to Part II of my interview with Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés, author of The Dangerous Old Woman: Myths and Stories of the Wise Woman Archetype.
In this interview the topic is "Sisterhood." My questions were based on her sharings in a particular segment of the DOW fireside chat, (which you can still listen to at Sounds True, by the way). Her remarks are powerful! I hope they will stir your hearts and encourage you to embrace a new, more soulful understanding of women's relationships—and sisterhood!

DR.E: My 40 years of clinical experience, my familial experiences are these: If there is evidence of mal-intent between ordinarily good-hearted women—wherein interactions aimed at one woman (or group of women-or men) have devolved into cruel scorn, exiling, and gossip sopped in ridicule—this often occurs because the soul of one or more of those attempting to intimidate/ harass—has been thwarted in its own creative life unfolding ... and they now turn to 'punish' the one who is still free.
DR.E: A "ridicule pack' is a group of two or more people whose lives mostly revolve around finding the 'badness' or 'lessness' of others, thereby attempting to elevate a doused spirit. Their way of bonding is to agree to join together in a form of low consciousness about the hearts, minds and souls of others. They judge others—and themselves—without deep insight, thereby holding distorted ideas about human nature, the gifts each person carries, what destinies others must follow. Lack of compassion for understanding varieties of the human condition—their own—and that of others—are a 'ridicule pack's' most prominent feature. It may be surprising for some to realize however, that often, individuals in such a group are not malicious, rather they are lonely, and do not know better, and have joined up for protection from a more powerful 'ridicule pack' that attempts to harm and exile them.
DR. E: By my sights, the most endangered species on earth is the human soul. It is the one who urges us to learn insight and devotional love to one another; it is wholly compassionate. Thereby, to reverse such pain between women, a wiser woman within would strive through reading, listening talking, and contemplating with others of better consciousness ... so we could raise consciousness about ourselves further, to better see our own foibles and gifts—to assert control over our lesser features, to strengthen and pour our gifts out into this needful world without cease. This is what the archetype of 'the wise woman' is based on ... the learning of consciousness beyond the shallow form the over-culture sprays onto us like a second prickly skin. The Dangerous Old Woman in tales would say: "Time to shed that false skin, and grow your real skin ... tender and strong, both."
DR.E: Sisterhood is a journey of the soul: Sisters walk together as fellow travelers on the road of life, stopping to aid other travelers as we can, and if we cannot help, to do no harm. Sisters, in unexpected moments, take on the wisdom of angels for one another. The Dangerous Old Woman in myths and tales is not afraid to carry a simple heart of forgiveness in ample supply ... nor to respect and love self and others ... not through the dim eyesight of the ego, but rather through the far-seeing 100x power eyes of the radiant soul.

JLL: Can you say more about how women restrict other women from living their giftedness? (Especially how this manifests in society and why it happens?)
JLL: What are "ridicule packs" and how are they destructive to our souls?
DR.E: A "ridicule pack' is a group of two or more people whose lives mostly revolve around finding the 'badness' or 'lessness' of others, thereby attempting to elevate a doused spirit. Their way of bonding is to agree to join together in a form of low consciousness about the hearts, minds and souls of others. It may be surprising for some to realize however, that often, individuals in such a group are not malicious, rather they are lonely, and do not know better, and have joined up for protection from a more powerful 'ridicule pack' that attempts to harm and exile them.
JLL: In light of the "Dangerous Old Woman" in all of us, what can women today do to reverse this phenomenon?
What CPE talks about here is exactly why I am so angry at the likes of yogini Tara Stiles for advertising her yoga by telling people that she had a student go from a size 8 to a double zero in just 15 minutes a day. Did she DISAPPEAR, I wonder!?
This is a "ridicule pack" on a national scale. And using YOGA as the weapon -- and a WOMAN doing this to other women!?!?
It turned into a pack when other yoginis began saying that anyone who had a problem with this (and it is an ETHICAL issue) was just jealous.
It's like freaking high school.
But sadly, women do this sort of thing to women every day. Women who get to the top who then refuse to help other women; mothers who tell their daughters they need to diet; "friends" who point out your "flaws."
We can be so nasty.
Conscious Sisterhood is the answer but how to nurture this?
hi, i'm still absorbing these interviews..there's much to consider here.
much gratitude and autumn blessings to you both..
xx
Oh, Christine, reading your response just sent chills through my entire body. Something like this makes me very sad, yet impassioned to continue to speak out as Dr. E does about how important it is for us nurture one another's souls. Not bash or ridicule. Lend a hand, give your heart, reach out, teach, share, hug our sisters. Everyone who suffers, we all do. We are all so tender...
Sue,
Hugs, happy reading..
I have seen the pack mentality – the looking for faults in other women. It is sad and seems to permeate some of the family dominated professions etc. I have been blessed with a sisterhood of friends who are supportive and cheering when I need it and help carry the load – there isn’t the back biting or anything but the sharing of lives. It is a sisterhood that I hold dear and one I give in return – not only to my friends but to female family and my daughter… and even to men (can they be a part of the sisterhood? Not sure).
I am looking forward to reading this work (though I would love to win those CDs!!)
Have a great weekend Jan and thanks for the lovely interview.
Breathing out I offer my love and support to living beings everywhere.
Breathing in I receive love and support in return.
This seems to be only way I my heart wants to respond to this interview.
gentle steps
Ms. Exception,
May we all celebrate and support the cause of sisterhood. May our collective consciousness break through the pack. May we hold all in compassion.
Laura,
May we breathe on with ease —together! And heal any wounds that bind...
Ladies, I have two thoughts expressed by Dr. E from this interview that I carry with me:
1) The most endangered species on earth is the human soul.
2.) Sisters, in unexpected moments, take on the wisdom of angels for one another.
This has been my experience and my hope is this: That if we listen, watch, and act upon our angelic instincts collectively the human soul will be released from all danger. We thrive and shine. May we all...
Two parts stand out to me:
1) "The DOW...would say: "Time to shed that false skin, and grow your real skin...tender and strong, both." (This is the process I am currently going through)
2) "The DOW...is not afraid to carry a simple heart of forgiveness in ample supply...nor to respect and love self and others...not through the dim eyesight of the ego, but rather through the far-seeing 100x power eyes of the radiant soul."(This is a blueprint for how I want to become).
She is so incredibly wise. Thank you for sharing this interview.
I am saddened at how women gang up on one another rather than lifting one another up. I am so fortunate to be in a group of women friends who uplift, encourage and hold one another accountable (with love) to be our truest selves.
This is something that has puzzled me during my entire career--why do women feel they have to compete with each other? Thank you for sharing her wonderful insights. I have always loved the quote "There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help women."
— Madeline Albright
I experience this within my life..
So, when I am in a group and the conversation is about others faults/complaining/whining..I simply ask please tell me something you are working on creatively within your life...or what is the brightest thing/most magical thing that happened to you today/this week?...or what made you smile today?
What I focus on grows and I like to be surrounded by inspiration and creativity, to use our words to build and repair..There is power in sisterhood and I encourage my friends to stand together, claim thta power and then use it to inject life with lots of positive..
I truly believe the "pack mentality" is an unconcious behavior and can often be turned, by one conscious individual, into a appreciative inquiry session leading to understanding and empathy. That concious individual just must find the courage to turn the conversation.
Coleen,
The two you share jumped out at my too, especially the last one. "The far seeing power of the 100x soul." I marvel at that thought...
Rebecca,
Yes you are most fortunate to have a kindred group of women. So many do not. This is one of the things I enjoy most about the web - being able to connect with people in a very supportive, encouraging way.
Gayle,
There is a really wonderful book which answers this question, The Friendship of Women" by Joy Carol. This phenomena seems to begin early on in our childhoods, much of it stemming from parental attention (or lack of). Especially with sisters, each subconsciously hoping to be "the favorite." A very rich and inspiring book!
Joy,
I appreciate how you refuse to bow to that which separates or negates! This is a beautiful spiritual practice, to always take the higher road, esp. in conversation...
Virginia,
Love it. Takes courage to turn the conversation - as Joy said above. To step out (even if it feels risky) to set a higher standard.
This is all so sad and true. I have mostly male friends and this is why. However, through blogging I have found woman more like me who don't do these silly things. Woman I feel safe around :-).
Thank you for this wonderful interview Jan. xoxo
I'm glad I found you.
