Another Spiritual Luminary Gives Gifts
I've featured her here at least once a year, a bright shining star in my own life—author and psychotherapist, Sue Patton Thoele.
This morning I was reading through my copy of Excellent As You Are: A Woman's Book of Confidence, Comfort and Strength. I was reminded once again of how important it is for us to stay conscious and awake—especially during the holidays—when we can can easily be lured into overwhelm and a hefty case of spiritual amnesia, forgetting every "truth" we know.
I came upon this selection to share with you now, in the hopes that it will jostle your spiritual memory so that you can stay fully present throughout the preparations and celebrations of December.
Enjoy!

Answering "Present!"
Feeling bored or overwhelmed may mean that we are approaching life like an apathetic teenager going to school—not present with enthusiasm but rather existing in a fog of indifference. If we play hooky from life by automatically doing what has to be done and savoring nothing, we're robbing ourselves of the change to vigorously feel and live life. We are not answering "Present!" when life calls the roll.
In order to feel vitally alive and live up to our creative potential, we need to make a commitment to being present, up front, and alert in our lives—not slumped in the back row, lethargically waiting for the bell to ring.
Encouraging ourselves to sit in the front row of life helps us to be attentive to and appreciate all of its varied aspects. When we answer, "Present!" we'll be rewarded by conscious living in which we are aware of our feelings rather than separated from them.
I give myself the gift of sitting up front in my life.
I pay attention.
I have a right to really experience my feelings.

Spiritual amnesia, please stay away
For this joyful fun holiday.
But hark, you'll never even come near.
Thanks to Jan's post and this vision so clear.
And from life shall I not play hookey
as I munch my Christmas cookies.
I shall renew these eyes I look through
And sit up front in life -- what a view!
hey, remember me?? :) :)
Hope you are well. Saw your sweet face over at Laura Hegfield's and remember I've been meaning to pop by and say hi!
And guess what I thought in thinking of you? I shall make YOUR sidebar button soon. I will make the one for Robbi next. Then yours.
xoxo
BB sends "mutch loves"
"a commitment to being present"...
This Christmas season was running toward me very fast...and I was dreading it more and more...till I made a commitment to being present to this Christmas and not the Christmas past....
I love this phrase "Encouraging ourselves to sit in the front row of life" ... so perfect. Sometimes we need a practice that helps guide us in this; ten days ago, I decided to begin a 60-day 'Journey of Soul Inquiry' using Soul Cards and am blogging about it -- this has been a wonderful practice of encouraging my Self! May the front row be long and filled to capacity! LOL ~ Bright Blessings ~
Hi Jannie,
I love this poem! You are such a bundle of fun creative energy. And a very good poet too! Thank you for this offering. It feels like a Christmas gift. I send you oodles of holiday mirth, Kellie and BB too! Friends forever ... Much loves back. :-)
Simonne,
This sounds like the ideal new "direction" for you. So glad. May the present unfold with ever more gifts for you!
Presence, the most loving gift we can give to others and to ourselves...beautiful post!!!
This post really hits home. I was and still am that way, when it comes to educational pursuits. Choosing to sit in the front of the class, being totally present to the experience, wanting to get as much out of it as possible. What a profound idea to expand that outlook to the rest of life! Major Lightbulb Moment. Thank you! :-)
Thank you for the kind reminder, Sue and Jan. I've been kind of apathetic at work, complaining of all the patients I have to see each day.
Today I was pleasantly awakened to the joy of my work, to give others (especially women) permission to feel their human emotions, to ask for help, to care for self, to find their inner light so they can light the way for others.
I didn't know about this new book ... leave it to you to introduce me to yet another wonderful new "present" for myself this season.
Darla,
May the front row bring you a clear and brilliant view. Your new blog series sounds awesome! I will check it out. Blessings!
Laura,
I'm with you. Presence says it all. No greater gift, indeed.
Coleen,
Oh, lightbulb moments are great! I am very glad to hear that clarity has come around this for you - and newfound energy too. Very cool!
Mermaid,
Celebrating this moment of awakening for you. To know that these words brought you back to being fully present for your patients is a gift of grace, for sure!
Cindy,
You will enjoy this "new" offering from Sue. It is a great little gift book. Happy holidays!
