Three Wishes

With pure delight I declare that this month on "Awake is Good" will be one of generosity, hospitality, and life-affirming, gift-giving energy!

Four full weeks of spiritual luminaries and distributing the gifts they've created. I hope you're ready for some fun!

Today, YOU are the luminary. WE are luminaries. When we are able to be calm, clear, and wise our true light shines forth and blesses everyone around us.

Today, in honor of us, I'd like to share with you my "holiday" column for Women's LifeStyle, the print magazine I have written a monthly column for for the past 12 years.

I'm sharing my 3 wishes (for myself) so I can shine ever more brightly—and I invite you to do the same! Read on ... Oh, and there's another Giveaway, so be sure to leave a comment.

∞∞∞∞∞

“When you wish upon a star …” Do you remember these lovely lyrics, sung by the character Jiminy Cricket in the Disney film “Pinocchio”? They assure us that if our “heart is in a dream, no request is too extreme,” all of our dreams will come true.
When we were children, it seemed like anything was possible. Wishes could be granted with the wave of a wand or a sprinkle of fairy dust. As adults we may hold a more mature, realistic view, understanding (from life experience) that wishing does not always make it so.

And, yet, there is something to be said about intentions, wishes of sorts, and holding a clear vision for one’s life. The ability to intend in this way—with passion and purpose—may lead us to the place where dreams are born, Jiminy Cricket style. The alternative—feeling hopeless or embittered—leads us nowhere.

This holiday season, as you find yourself making choices about gift giving, consider what gifts you might like to intend and consciously create for yourself this year. What treasures of the Spirit would you like to bring into your life? Here are three of mine. I invite you to pull up a chair, pour a cup of tea, and write down three of your own. Wishing may not make it so, but wholehearted intention will.

Inner Freedom
One of the very best gifts I can give myself is to be fully aware of my thoughts and feelings. When I am awake and alert, I can choose how to respond to what is happening around me with grace—instead of reacting to others with sloppy words, impatience, or temper. React or respond: this is the key to inner freedom. We do have the power to choose our words and actions. This is an incredibly powerful gift! If we intend to stop, look, and listen before we do anything, it ensures peace of mind and harmonious relations with others—two more shining stars of the season!

Health and Longevity
I want to be healthy and strong. I’d like to live for a very long time. I love this life! It is a precious thing to be born a human being. But wishing for my body to be healthy is not good enough. Each year many of us intend to eat healthier, organic, and lower on the food chain. We intend to get more exercise to build muscle and stamina. And simply thinking about this by sitting on the couch eating fast food we purchased at a drive-through restaurant does not support that intention. Choice by choice, we give our body a healthful gift or a booby prize. We must make choices every single day to give it what it needs to be strong, fight off disease, and maintain energy.

Love
Did I save the best wish for last? Perhaps. The older I get the more I realize that not much in life matters if I don’t have love. Love of my partner, of family and friends. Love of work and creative expression. Love of the Earth and her bounty. Love of growth and the opportunity to be all that I can be. But in order to receive this love, I must have an open heart. I must be able to fully give love, too. So my third and final wish would be for me to live with a wide-open heart as best I can; to not shut down or close off to others; to not judge or discriminate or neglect. I wish to be kind; to extend myself to others as best I can; to live with unconditional friendliness toward all beings—both animal and human. This is a life worth living, one rooted in love.

“Fate is kind,” sang Jiminy, “She brings to those who love the sweet fulfillment of their secret longing.” These are my secret longings this holiday season— inner freedom, health, and love—and because I do love, I hope they will be granted.

What are yours? Perhaps we can meet under the tree and share our gifts. What bounty we would have!

Jan, I haven't stopped by long enough to leave a message in ages but I subscribe to your blog and always read it and love your truly heartfelt sharings. Life has been full and a time of deep inner work...clearing out much of the debris! Just when you think you've cleared out most of it, you find more in a corner somewhere...it's always possible to go deeper!

I love your own "three wishes" and have shared mine with you here...

...a deep inner peace that comes from true self love

...a fountain of creative energy to explore the expression of spirit through art.

...a feeling of unity and oneness with those whom I share life...both my close relationships and those who I may only know in passing.

Blessings to you Jan!

Every time I read your posting I tell myself "I am so glad I came across this blog!"

My three wishes without going into details are:
-Health
-Acceptance
-Serenity....

Julie December 6, 2010 3:49 PM

LOVE is my first wish because I long for it with all my heart. I want to know how to love others better and to open myself to receive love back.
HUMILITY- I wish to know the pain and suffering of others so I may be open to compassion for them.
PATIENCE- I wish to receive the gift of patience, to be calm and know how to wait for what is best for me.

Beautiful! I would say, for me, flexibility (in body and mind), perseverance (don't drop the ball! LOL), and non-judgment (toward self and others). Thank you for being an inspiration!

Kate,
Your three touch my heart! These virtues ring true for me too, esp. the joy of creative expression these days. En-Joy yours. :-)

Simonne,
I am glad you are finding "home" here. Your three are great too, and I love your wish for acceptance. So very powerful...

Julie,
These 3 are potent and do you notice how they all flow together? Truly, how could we have even one of these if the other was absent? Beautiful, sparkly wishes!

Chris December 6, 2010 4:06 PM

I just sent you my info. So excited to read SARK's new book. Thanks again!!

p.s. Your post about 3 wishes reminds me of invisiblepeople.tv. It's a site where homeless people share their stories on video. At the end, they are asked to state their 3 wishes.

1.) To look past the judgements and allow feminine wisdom and intuition to shine through.

2.) To love and accept what is, even the painful parts.

3.) To be healthy and strong in mind, body, and spirit to the best of my ability.

(Sounds a lot like yours:)

My three wishes...hmmm...

First - my baby girl to be home. Short term wish, long term benefits.

Second - the ability to build a stronger family harmony. This is something we work on every day

Third - the knowledge and ability to raise my children to be stewards of our planet

Lately, all of my wishes have revolved around our family...

Janice Lynne Lundy December 7, 2010 12:26 PM

Darla,
Your 3 remind me of what I call "mature spirituality." These are "difficult" virtues, not easy peasey ones, but, oh the benefits!

Chris,
Yes, congrats again on your win! I am not familiar with the TV show but it sounds interesting. :-)

Mermaid,
Powerful wishes, esp. the one about being well with what is. Equanimity! Yay!

April,
Wonderful wishes from a conscious mama! Your children are blessed. :-)

Coleen December 7, 2010 12:31 PM

1) I borrow yours for Health and Longevity, but along with eating healthier and exercise add a wish for more sleep!

2) The ability to show myself as much understanding and empathy as I so readily show others.

3) The ability to Let Go and refocus on what is important.

One Woman's Journey December 7, 2010 2:55 PM

Jan, a wonderful post. I have reread it 3 times. Wondered how to respond since my wishes are basically the same as yours.
I have always been very sensitive and quick to speak and judge. This is a trait I have been working on for some time. Especially with my children - just listen. They are my children but they are adults. My health is something I have always worked on and will continue.
Love, a part of my daily prayer - for many years - has been to reach out in love to all who cross my path, be sensitive to other's needs. I need love and when other's reach out to me - it blesses me.
Also a special wish to pace myself, do something special for myself once in a while and remember I am the matriarch of my family - but still on my journey of spiritual growth.

Janice Lynne Lundy December 7, 2010 4:24 PM

Coleen,
Great wishes. I ditto the sleep for you! And support the lovingkindness. Never enough of that!

Hilary,
I send you 3 extra special wishes for 2011. Peace of mind, love in your heart, time to pursue your passions. How's that?

One Woman,
Lovely wishes for yourself and others, all deeply rooted in love and understanding. I bow...

May EVERYONE'S WISHES COME TRUE!

Sheryl December 7, 2010 4:46 PM

I've chosen one that I liked as soon as I read it (I can't remember where)and two from my daily metta practice:

Smile like I mean it ...
Serenity ...
Inspiration to make art ...

Sheryl,
Oh, so nice...Love the one about smiling. May we all be committed to that simple intention...one that can turn so many lives toward the better. Thank you!
